WELCOME TO MY OCCASIONAL BLOG!

23.05.08

Our final morning in Barcelona as we're flying home mid afternoon. We decided to have a lie in after a few days of sight seeing and last nights drinking session, but soon enough we were off to the airport, though even the bus ride was a bit exhausting for Gareth!

The flight home allowed me to once again indulge in my obsession for taking pictures from the air and I got some great views this time.

All too soon we were back at the collection of sheds that is Bournemouth Airport and a voicemail on a mobile phone saying that our mortgage valuer was not prepared to grant a mortgage to meet the full asking price of a flat we had hoped to part buy. Not the best news to come home, so lots of phone calls ahead next week.

We awoke to the weather that we'd seen forecast before we left the UK. Grey skies and light rain, not the best weather for exploring, but undeterred we set off.
First stop was Park Güell, designed by Gaudi and constructed between 1900 and 1914. It has great views across the city that must look great when it isn't raining!

The park is also home to the famous Gaudi dragon fountain where everyone seemed to have their photo taken, so not to be left out....

The weather started to improve so we soon found ourselves back at La Rambla where we wandered through the stalls and shops and made our way to the indoor market where they sell a very extensive selection of ice creams. Gareth managed to devour a combination of ferrero rocher, kinder surprise and mint flavours. Delicious he claims!
My sister Glenys and her friends Olwyn and Liz flew into Barcelona last night for their own holiday here, so we arranged to meet up with them and soon found ourselves in a street cafe at the beach end of La Rambla. What started out as a drink and a bite to eat to catch up became quite a few drinks and a really great evening!

I definitely staggered back to the hotel afterwards so I do wonder if they ever found theirs!

Let sightseeing commence! We awoke to a glorious sunny day which defied the forecast at least. First stop was La Sagrada Familia, the awe inspiring Gaudi designed cathedral that remains under construction.

After a long queue we finally got access to the lift that goes up inside one of the towers but the wait was so worth it. The views were just breathtaking.

Next we headed to La Pedrera, a combined office and apartment block designed by Gaudi and built between 1905 and 1910.

The rooftop chimneys are instantly recognisable as Gaudi creations and I must have done at least three circuits of the rooftop just taking in the stunning designs!

We next started to walk back towards La Rambla and by coincidence happened upon another Gaudi creation, Casa Batlló,

a beautifully refurbished building, both inside

and out, with another striking rooftop too.

After a wander down La Rambla we got to the Plaça del Portal de la Pau which has as its centrepiece the 197ft Monument a Colom (Christopher Colombus). I braved the very tiny lift so I could take in the views from the observation area just below the statue itself

Next we walked along the beach,

eventually arriving at the Frank Gehry's "Peix", the golden fish.

Then it was a very leisurely walk back towards La Rambla and then up to Plaça Catalunya where we decided to eat at The Hard Rock Cafe. I'm not a huge fan of these places as, despite being a music lover, they are just too loud. Luckily for me they were showing a football match when we ate so apart from cheers when goals were scored it was a very sedate and the food was great. We then headed back to the hotel to get some sleep before more sightseeing tomorrow!

Now it's time for the 'honeymoon'! We travelled to Bournemouth "Airport" to get our flight. For "Airport" read a few portable wooden cabins linked together. They are doing a major rebuild so I'll forgive them this once!
We were flying cattle class with Ryanair, but hey, we paid £22 each for the return trip, so for that price a seat on the inside of the plane was a bonus!
In no time at all we were on a bus from Girona airport into the centre of Barcelona where we swapped onto the incredibly efficient underground system and checked into our hotel. Even though it was quite late we set off to do a little exploring and found ourselves at the top of La Rambla, where as luck would have it we found a Spanish Pizza Express, called Pizza Marzano.

We happily stuffed our faces there and then headed back to the hotel, fed and happy, prepared for the sightseeing tomorrow!

After a relaxing morning spent with my sister Glenys we had the photos developed from all the disposable cameras we'd put on the tables at the party on Saturday. Some absolute gems amongst them!
When we got home to Basingstoke Gareth set up a new website so everyone can easily see them.
Go to

Woke up feeling slightly exhausted so the hotel breakfast was first priority! After various farewells we went to visit my Dad and his partner Pam as they'd been unable to make it to the ceremony due to ill health. We met up with my sister Julie and her partner Joe there and we all looked like we needed quite a few more hours sleep!
When we got back to our hotel at around 4pm we decided to have a short nap before going out to eat later in the evening. Well that was the plan anyway, but a nap turned into 16 hours continuous sleep!

Today's the day!
Our day.
Our Civil Partnership.
Our way of showing the world just how committed we are to each other. We've been planning this for such a long time it's hard to believe that the day has finally arrived. And after last nights fun there is no better way to start the day than with the incredible breakfast offered at the hotel!
Gareth then joined his family for some last minute shopping leaving me some quiet time. As I ironed our shirts it gave me chance to reflect on the last four years since meeting Gareth. I believe that there is someone for everyone and some of us are lucky enough to find that person. Their soul mate. That happened to me the day I met Gareth in 2003. It was love at first sight for me and led to that memorable day in Paris in 2004 where I took him to the top of the Eiffel Tower to propose. Well I say propose, if some garbled words as I cried like a baby count as a proposal! He did say 'yes' though, despite probably having no idea what he was agreeing to!
Which leads us through four very happy years and onto today, when we'll commit to the rest of our lives together. It doesn't get much better than this!
As I pottered around quietly in the hotel room I remembered all the people who have meant so much to me in my life and for whatever reason can't be here today. I'm sure they are thinking of me too, wherever they are. My peace was occasionally interrupted by texts arriving on my phone, making me smile as all the good luck messages popped up.
Everyone was soon back at the hotel and we did some frantic last minute decorating in the room that we are having the party in later. A big thank you to Gareth's Mum, Laura, Katy, Sarah, Connor, Liam, and Hannah for the beautiful end results!
Soon enough it was time to get showered, shaved and dressed. It was the shaving bit I was looking forward too as I was starting to look even more haggard with a beard, but had needed a few days growth to ensure a really close shave for today!
Our Best Men Scott and Jon arrived and made sure we looked our best

before we left our room and headed down in the lift to the reception hall of the hotel where everyone was gathering.
When the lift doors opened the first sight I saw was my great niece Ella chasing my great nephew Daniel, both of them looking really cute, which was enough to get my eyes filled with tears and I wasn't even out of the lift yet. The next few minutes were utterly surreal. It was like having various stages of your life flash in front of your eyes. Family, friends old and new, colleagues from different stages of my working life, everywhere I looked were people I knew and loved. My expression has since been likened to a frightened rabbit in the headlights! As we waited for the Registrar to arrive I darted around between as many people as I could, saying "hello" and "speak later" over and over, sparing a few seconds to stroke my dog Bonnie, wearing a big silver ribbon around her neck! I then went to to do a last minute check on the room where the ceremony would take place. It was at that point I realised I had absolutely no idea what the actual ceremony would involve and I started to wonder if I was supposed to have revised! I saw the Registrar arrive and started to relax a little and then I watched the Registrar leave and the moment of calm evaporated! She'd forgotten a specific pen that we were required to use to sign the official paperwork so was running back to her office to get it, which gave me even more time to panic!! In the meantime the flowers had arrived and I have to say that the florist had done us proud. They were beautiful!
Soon enough the Registrar returned, pen safely in hand, and almost immediately we were stood at the front of the ceremony room ready to say our vows. I'd pre-warned the Registrar that I was expecting to have problems because I was convinced I was going to cry and I could feel the tears welling up as she started to address the room. When she finished the part about anyone knowing any reason why we shouldn't go ahead with the ceremony I held my breath, and as the silence grew I pretended to wipe the sweat from my brow, which brought instant laughter behind me and in doing so helped me relax and avert the tears I'd expected to flow! As Gareth was coming to the end of the lines he had to repeat after her it suddenly occurred to me that I didn't know if we had to say "I will" or "I do". I could sense Gareth was thinking the same, so when the Registrar mouthed the correct one I was so relieved. A little too relieved as it turned out as she then turned to me and asked me to repeat my first line after her. She said it and my mind went completely blank. I just stood there, mute. Then I woke up and with wonderful etiquette and class I dumbly said "What?" Second laugh of the ceremony secured! We were supposed to look into each others eyes as we repeated our vows, but Gareth was looking anywhere but at me! I knew if he looked at me he would cry so all I could sense was his Mum looking at me as I looked just over his shoulder. Gareth had warned me not to be put off if I could hear her loading a gun during the ceremony, in case I changed my mind, and that thought kept me going until the end! Once we were past the signing of paperwork we had to walk through the middle of the room to leave as everyone took photo's of a very relieved couple!

The hotel had laid out a red carpet for us and had two glasses of champagne waiting as we left the room. Two much needed drinks I can confirm!
As we thanked everyone as they filed out of the room quite a few people commented on how beautiful they thought the words we'd chosen were. In all honesty we couldn't remember a word we'd just said, so bad were the nerves!
Best man Jon alerted us that we should start getting photo's taken whilst everyone was still in the one place and started to round everyone up. Together with Gareth's sister Laura they did a brilliant job of ensuring we have some great photographic memories from the day, so a big thank you to both!

Soon it was time for everyone to relocate into the main room ready for the buffet and party that was to follow. This gave us the opportunity to go from table to table in an attempt to speak to everyone who was there. We had a good try anyway! The bar was clearly very popular and the drinks had really started to flow. We had planned to serve some more food much later and then get the music started but we could sense a restlessness in the room so brought all this forward to give everyone the chance to get up and dance. Somehow word got to the DJ that we were going to lead the first dance and it took on hell of a lot of coaxing to get us on the dance floor in front of everyone. At least the song was "Just Can't Get Enough" by Depeche Mode! From that moment on the party really started! There are so many moments that will stay in my memory forever; Matt dancing! Scott, Jon, Gareth and I all dancing to 'Kylie' and Mark (Basingstoke) placing a handbag on the floor amongst us! Polly, Janet and Amanda dancing to Bananarama! Mark (Cardiff) and I, dancing and singing at the top of our voices to "Local Boy In The Photograph" by 'The Stereophonics'. Seeing Bill and Karen arrive, who I hadn't seen in years! Scott and I being reunited with Stocky after more years than I dare admit! The Police arriving to "arrest" Jon (a big thank you to my nephew Leigh for organising that!). Just seeing everyone having such a great time. I hope Gareth and I managed to spend a little time with each and every guest.
All too soon it was time for people to leave and for us to drag ourselves upstairs to our suite, exhausted but happy! We spent time reading all the cards and then the comments people had written in the guest book. We laughed when we read the entries from my work colleagues when we realised that they each had the words "and Matt" next to each signature! The beautiful entry from my nephew Leigh brought a few tears too. At 3am we collapsed into bed, exhausted but so happy!

Thank you to everyone who helped make it the best day of our lives.

A busy time ahead as lots of people are arriving today. We started by moving ourselves into The Angel Hotel and no sooner were we settled into our suite (a surprise even to us!) that the texts started to arrive alerting us to arrival times. Gareth headed to the bus station to meet Kirsten and Ute after their trip from Hamburg and I went to the airport to collect my sister Julie and her partner Joe who travelled from The Hague. As we got to the hotel I saw Gareth's Dad walking Bonnie as they'd arrived with Gareth's Mum and sister Laura while I was at the airport. Another text and we were off to the railway station to meet Morgan and Håkan who had just arrived from Sweden. At that point a 'short' trip to the hotel bar was definitely required and we were soon joined by my work colleague Matt and then Mandy arrived too.
Gareth's Dad then invited all of us for a champagne toast so we all went to our suite to enjoy some bubbly!

The plan for the evening was for everyone who had arrived today to all meet up in a pub overlooking Cardiff Bay for a few drinks. Well that was the plan anyway. I was so thrilled to have everyone together that a few drinks became a lot of drinks!

The party continued well into the early hours and for Gareth and I it ended the way every party should end in Cardiff. We went to the legendary Caroline Street to the Dorothy Fish Bar and had chicken curry off the bone and chips. I have vague recollections of staggering down St.Marys Street at around 2am stuffing my face!

Today I got the tattoo I've been planning for a long time. I wanted the logo above, together with the date of our Civil Partnership put onto my back. It took no time at all and I think it looks great!

Next task was doing some last minute shopping around town. We went to the Central Market to sort the flowers out for Saturday as there is nothing like being prepared! The florist was brilliant and convinced us that the huge cost would be worth it! I believed her based on the fact that we went to school together! As we wandered the shops I received a text message from my sister Glenys alerting me that my brother John and his family would be arriving in Cardiff later today. As I thought about the fact they had travelled from Canada to be at the Civil Partnership it became the catalyst for the nerves to kick in. Big time!! Not 'second thoughts' nerves, more 'oh my god, people are making such an effort to share our day' nerves. I actually went quiet, it was that bad. We sat in Starbucks, me gripping my coffee cup in silence!
It was only when we met up with the family later to go for a meal that I started to calm down. A big thank you to my brother John and his wife Sue for the meal too!

We drove to Cardiff today which made everything even more real in readiness for Saturday. Before we left I noticed that my favourite flower, a poppy, had bloomed in our front garden. A sign that all would go well!

Our great friend Mandy (Mind) generously offered to let us stay at her house for a few days before we transfer to the hotel on Friday.
After a quick catch up we set off for Ikea for some extras we needed for the tables at the Civil Partnership and then we went to Cardiff Bay for something to eat, which gave us the opportunity to 'people watch' as we ate. Well I say 'people watch' when I really mean judge, because believe me there were some 'unusual' sights to be seen as some real fashion disasters walked past, and people who clearly didn't read the sizing of the clothes they had squeezed themselves into!
We ended the evening back at Mind's

where she opened some champagne and gave us brilliant wedding presents too! Some beautiful candle holders, one of which Gareth chose to pose with whilst wearing some ribbon on his head.

 Thank you Mind!

The countdown to our Civil Partnership feels like it begins today as it's my last day at work. I arrived to find my work area adorned with a big Congratulations banner and my desk had been beautifully decorated too!

A big thank you to all involved, despite the fact that they had wanted to do it after I left the office last night, but I worked really late and was wondering why people were just hanging around! They actually hid in another office and waited for me to finally leave! Sorry!
